  Finished Lecture “Modeling the development of premodern Islamic Societies through computational analysis of written sources” (Jan. 26)

  We’ll have Dr. Maxim Romanov as a speaker of the workshop this month. Dr. Romanov is the pioneer of digital humanities in Islamic studies. Currently, he is working on the project “The Evolution of Islamic Societies (c.600-1600 CE): Algorithmic Analysis into Social History” (2021-2027) at Hamburg University as Emmy Noether junior research group leader.

  A01″Mobility and Universality in the Islamic Economy” will hold a workshop “Islamic Economy in comparisons” with C01 “Analyses of Connectivities by Digital Humanities Methods.” In this workshop, Ayumu KONASUKAWA, specializing in archeology in South Asia, will discusses the economy and society in the Pre-“State”/Pre-“Islamic” Period, taking that of Indus civilization as an example.

  C01″Digital Humanities” and B01 “The Ideas of the Muslim Community and State Systems” will hold a workshop titled “How to Describe Social Interactions as Structured Data?: Knowledge Graph for Primary Source Contents.” This workshop will invite Mr. Jun OGAWA, majoring Ancient history of Europe as a presenter introducing how to describe and analyze human relationships stated in primary sources.

  Finished Workshop “The actual condition and practice of OCR for Arabic” (Mar.19)

  C01 “Digital Humanities” and A01 “Mobility and Universality in the Islamic Economy” will hold a workshop titled “The actual condition and practice of OCR for Arabic.” This workshop will perceive the actual condition of OCR for Arabic and digitizing the texts brought by the participants with OCR. Finally, the workshop will explain what we can do by using digitized text.

  Finished Workshop “The ideas and prospects of “Historical Digital Globe” (GIS)” (Feb.15)

  “Historical Digital Globe” is a GIS application which is designed and under development by Hiroshi Goto, a co-investigator of C01 for temporal and spatial visualization of transfer of people and things. This workshop introduces its pilot product whose implementation is requested to Esri Japan, the vender of ArcGIS, and have a discussion about the subject with the participants’ comments. We would like to have a brainstorming discussion also about what data the participants have and whether we can visualize them.

  Finished Workshop “Visualizing ‘Ulamas’ Connectivities: Prospects and Challenges of Computational Analyses” (Feb.4)

  C01″Digital Humanities” will hold a workshop with B01”Principles and State Systems of Islamic Community.” We will share the ways of machine-readable Arabic text creation and their problems and discuss how we can offer connectivity analyses through analyses of biographical dictionary.
